Seeing the sudden gleam in the gloom Bilbo looked round. He gave a great cry: he had seen a sight that made his heart leap, dark shapes small yet majestic against the distant glow. “The Eagles! The Eagles!” he shouted. “The Eagles are coming!”

89. The Hobbit special edition, illustrated by the fantastic @jemimacatlin.bsky.social (HarperCollins, 2013) - signed by her at Oxonmoot that year. The illustrations are perfect, I recommend this to anyone planing to read to their children. Still in print (standard edition), if you want one!

I'm a long-time fan of Jemina's illustrated Hobbit - it's different from a lot of the "standard" Tolkien artists, and works so well for the children's book it really is.

The magic ring is clearly a game-changer for Sam (and for Bilbo, let's be honest here). It adds an extra twist to the whole thing - Sam stays locked in through the daring escape first from Gollum & then from the Goblins.

The magic ring is clearly a game-changer for Sam (and for Bilbo, let's be honest here). It adds an extra twist to the whole thing - Sam stays locked in through the daring escape first from Gollum & then from the Goblins.
