Phoenix, AZ, has received more precipitation than Des Moines, IA, thus far this fall. Through 11/20, fall precipitation in Phoenix has been 5.89 inches, and in Des Moines it has been 4.60 inches.

It is saddening to see the loss of life and property associated with Hurricane Melissa. From a purely science perspective, hurricanes are giant heat engines which redistribute the Earth’s heat imbalances. If hurricanes did not exist then something(s) even worse may exist instead.

Today. I reported for jury selection. Ultimately, I was not selected. It was interesting to see and be part of the judicial process, and I would have liked to continue further. On a lighter note, before I left the courtroom, I was able to take a picture of the judge.

Temps will be much cooler Monday in central #Iowa than they have been for the past several days. Normal highs in #DesMoines during this week are in the mid 60s and normal lows are in the mid 40s. For the latest official NWS forecast refer to weather.gov.

Happy fall! The autumnal equinox occurred today at 119 pm CDT. It is the beginning of astronomical fall. Day and night are nearly equal everywhere. We also lose daylight at the greatest rate. Des Moines, IA, loses 2.8 mins per day. The losses increase with increasing latitude.
