"Specialization is for insects."
I've been aggressively hiding FB ads (randomly callin them "Irrelevant", "Already bought", "Too personal") and getting my feed down top posts and groups I actually care about, ads started popping up with a vengeance after Blackout Friday. Coincidence?

It's very reasonable for normal, upstanding Americans to make clear that they won't stand for unAmerican trash like JD Vance. Everyone has their limits.
🚨 BREAKING: After torpedoing yesterday’s meeting with Zelensky, JD Vance fled to Vermont for vacation—only to be met by hundreds of furious protesters.

Couldn’t have happened to a better guy!

One of the recommendations to avoid burnout is to find your role in the resistance. I have some experience with the federal grant process and the history of science (and what happens when politics interferes with science), so here are a few thoughts on the issue:

At a conference in Munich, J. D. Vance said:

Zelensky Says Ukraine Is Unlikely to Survive the War Without U.S. Support (Gift Article)
His comments came on the first day of the Munich Security Conference, where anxious European officials had hoped to learn more about U.S. plans to broker peace talks.

I haven't seen anyone talk about this, but cutting $1 trillion in government spending is likely to produce a recession.

Anyone remember "Dark Angel" (the James Cameron series with Jessica Alba)?

Anyway, you might want to get paper copies of your social security earnings over the years:

So I know I have MAGAt "friends" and relatives on Facebook.

They are very, very, very quiet right now, posting about the most innocuous things possible.

It's tempting to reach out to them...but are they quiet because they're appalled, or are they quiet because they're happy?

Just a quick note to our international friends:

Wine is mostly made in blue states (CA, NY).

Distilled alcohol is mostly made in red states (KY, TN).

You know what to do...

Real question: The threats to companies that have DEI policies makes me wonder what exactly could DOJ do to such companies? The current standard of proof for discrimination cases is very high, so prosecuting a company for discriminating against a white person would seem impossible?

In anticipation of deregulation ( = "Food safety inspectors? Who needs'em...") we got an aquaponic system to grow greens. I strongly recommend this.

So I knew that Danica McKellar was a math major. I just found out that Felicia Day was one as well. (Because I'm compiling a not-so-serious list of other things you can do with a math major, that's why...)

I have confirmed that I'm a mathematician: I automated a task that would take 30 seconds to do manually. It took me half an hour, the last twenty minutes of which was because I miscounted.

Day four of my Facebook vacation.

I don't miss it. I'll go back, as I have too many contacts there to completely abandon the platform, but it's easier to break from than it might seem.
