This is the third painting that I’ve done in this fashion, and each one had helped me lease how I can do things better, or adjust my approach to encourage certain types of results. If I could get my shit together (unlikely, lol) I’d create a video montage that shows the progression. 🙏🏻

I do a lot of pre-painting analysis and adjustment with the source SVG to figure out the optimal order to proceed. This is when I take paint transparency into consideration, etc.

I posted a WIP photo a moment ago which shows how I approach it. Since this is all my code I’ve written tools that generate guides on the edges, based on which layers I will be painting. I then plot those onto tape and use a ruler to mask out each layer by hand.

I use a combination of tools, but tape is my biggest friend. I like to put guidelines on the edges and then use a ruler to place the tape. It’s a bit of a process, for sure.

That is hilariously accurate, and thankfully not my inspiration. 😅

I have always found his practice fascinating.

Plus, the mental process of painting is so completely distinct from that of programming that every work is a new exploration of what I can do better, from both the programming side as well figuring out ways to really elevate the medium (a thing I didn't think about a lot as a digital artist, tbh).
