Digital exploration of some ideas I have for a physical work.

If only it were that easy, lol.

Finally got around to building my KLOR keyboard, and I have to say I'm really loving it so far! 🎉

Completed this painting recently. I've transitioned to a mode of art making where I create computer algorithms that generate images, which I then paint by hand. I find mapping rigid computer-based processes to the messy real world to be extremely satisfying.

I use a combination of tools, but tape is my biggest friend. I like to put guidelines on the edges and then use a ruler to place the tape. It’s a bit of a process, for sure.

Made some "art trading cards" for an upcoming end-of-term art club party at my local community college (where I've been taking painting classes).

Looking forward to seeing what other folks bring - I'm the only person making such aggressively abstract work. 😅

I spent yesterday plotting this very detailed image. Regular paper didn't hold up to the image's many overlapping strokes unless I used a ballpoint, which shed ink in a distracting way.

In the end, Yupo paper provided the best result. Amazing detail/tonal gradation. 🔥

"Use physics simulations to create your art," they said. "It will be fun!" they said... 😭😝

Another PCB test, this time with the detail turned up. 🔎

I've been trying to understand what draws me to this aesthetic, and I think it's because I find there to be a certain beauty in the complexity of modern technology, especially when mixed with an organic component.

For some reason today I decided to try to replicate the aesthetic of a printed circuit board.

I have some vague ideas of how I might apply this in the future, but just getting it to this point was interesting.

#Genuary26: Symmetry

I think the outputs from this algorithm would make cool/interesting stained glass.

Somewhat hilariously, my creative coding library didn't support triangles. It could draw rectangles, circles, and lines in HDR really, really fast. But not triangles. 😅

No longer! Today I read some OpenGL specs and added fast tris to the mix. 🎉

Small victories, lol.

Plotted an output from my recent #genuary triangular subdivision algorithm. Needs some color, IMO, but has potential.

#Genuary 12/13/14: A line-based triangle subdivision algorithm

Three prompts in one project/day is some kind of record for me, but these all fit together so nicely I couldn't resist. I want to go back and color the tris, though. Soon.

#Genuary Day 8: Draw one milion of something

This is one million random values drawn from an 8 octave FBM, plotted as a continuously growing radial histogram with min/max values mapped into TAU. 😅

While I'm a fan of the messy lines that Bic ballpoints create, every so often I like to pull out my 0.2mm Rotring Isographs. Their immaculate ink flow and line consistency is incredible, and they excel at geometric abstractions like these.

My experiments with unpredictable mediums continue. This image is a single line drawn with a Bic Cristal ballpoint. I greatly prefer the artifacts caused by this type of pen when creating these works. The less reliable, the better!

Another experiment with oil-based ballpoint pens. Here I used a very small increment for each line, resulting in very slow progress and some interesting gradients as the ink accumulated in certain sections of the image.

Plot time: ~30 hrs over 4 sessions

A recent abstract geometric oil painting. In this case, I programmed a recursive algorithm to generate the overall structure, and then painted the result on 18"x24" ABS. The transformation from digital to physical via my own hands was deeply rewarding.

What all of my time with my X-ACTO knife yesterday got me. 🎉

Recently I've been creating new algorithmic artworks with the goal of using the patterns as a basis for my oil paintings and learning a lot. I have so many ideas now, but I have to get this final project done first. 😅

More to come!
