Michigan State Senator from the 15th district.

I'm fighting for clean water, equal rights, and to help people out of poverty.

I like Great Lakes, human rights, free speech, and clean energy.
Thank you to Judge Erane Washington and Ypsilanti Township for hosting a great grand opening for the newly renovated 14B District Court.

SB141 codifies federal rules to reduce "fugitive methane." This bill would give regulators tools to reduce methane and VOC emissions at the wellhead by 95%. This is a reasonable and feasible way to reduce waste and pollution by requiring drillers to use best practices when operating in Michigan.

Today I testified on behalf of two bills meant to reduce pollution and subsidies for oil and gas drillers.

SB140 increases the fee paid by oil & gas companies to cover the cost of the employees that permit and inspect their wells. Currently, Michigan taxpayers subsidize this program with $4M/year.

The circus of corruption continues. The President isn’t satisfied with his payments from corporations seeking approvals from his government, so now he wants YOU to pay him $230M.

The circus of corruption in the White House continues, this time with a presidential pardon, wiping away accountability for George Santos.

The rule of law means nothing to this administration, unless it is a tool to enhance their power and control.

In Senate Committee, we just passed a package of legislation meant to protect consumers from unfair or arbitrary treatment from insurance companies.

These bills prohibit “post claim underwriting,” require insurers to fund market studies that regulators use to analyze rates, ...

I voted NO today on increasing fees for EV and plug-in hybrid drivers.

Michigan should be the leaders in building the cars of the future, not the leaders in taxing the cars of the future.

Unfortunately, the bill passed.

The circus of corruption continues.

In this edition, Trump and Republicans are using government agencies for campaigning. This is another clear violation of ethical and legal boundaries.

School is in session, but the Michigan Legislature still hasn't passed a budget. This is outrageous and is already damaging K12 schools. If it continues, districts will need to borrow to make payroll, or worse.

The environmental protection budget from Michigan Republicans puts our drinking water and our Great Lakes at risk.

By slashing the funding and the staff meant to protect Michigan’s drinking water and air quality, this irresponsible budget puts our health at risk & endangers the Great Lakes we love.

The Senate passed a package of bills today that improve protections for consumers' data. These bills will:

1) Require businesses that collect data to implement and maintain reasonable security procedures to protect data from unlawful use or disclosure.

Today was the first day of school in my kids’ district. Meanwhile, in Lansing, we still don't have a budget passed for K-12 schools.

Our Senate Democratic budget makes important investments in:
1) Smaller class sizes in younger grades
2) Literacy materials, trainings, and tutors

Smaller class sizes for early grades

School safety and mental health grants

Training, materials, and extra help to improve literacy

Universal breakfast and lunch at our schools.

School is starting all over Michigan, and Republicans have still not passed a full budget proposal. Schools deserve better and taxpayers deserve to see House Republicans' proposal.

Michigan Senate Democrats are working to pass a budget that supports our students with:

Michigan Senate Democrats held a great hearing yesterday on a program called "Rx Kids" that is successfully fighting poverty, improving birth outcomes, reducing evictions, and leveraging private funds to help young families.

Our schools, our local governments, our mental health professionals, our police, our roads, prisons, forest and wildlife management professionals all deserve better.

Our people deserve better.

Michigan Republicans can't pass a budget. Here we are in July, and they still haven't passed the main budget bill. Maybe they're spending too much time trying to blame Democrats for their failure to do their work?

Today is the deadline for MI to pass a budget. Senate Democrats passed a reasonable, balanced budget several weeks ago. House Republicans keep posturing and refusing to negotiate.

Even though House Republicans voted for this deadline, now they are ignoring the deadline, leaving schools hanging.

Adding trillions to the debt.

Cutting people off healthcare and food assistance.

All to put more money in the pockets of the wealthy elites.

Medicaid cuts don't save money. They push the costs to you.

The Republicans' plan means that we pay more for a worse outcome, all to line the pockets of the wealthy elites.

I'm delighted that we passed my bill today that closes a loophole in the Safe Drinking Water Act to ensure that all water delivered to mobile homes is subject to testing and regulation by the state.

Proposed cuts to food assistance will hurt kids, older adults, and our state budget.

Parents of kids shouldn't get cut off when their kids are older and hungrier, and older adults shouldn't be cut off, forcing them to choose between rising costs for food, medicine, and housing.

Michigan needs to follow through on our new literacy laws. Last year, we passed literacy legislation that weaves the science of reading into early elementary reading instruction.

Now, we need a budget that follows through on the training, coaches, and high-quality literacy materials that we need.

Trump continues to stoke the coals of conflict and embroil the United States into war.

Tehran is a city of around 10M people. Our president is openly threatening a city of ten million people with violence. Threatening civilians is wrong, and it is also counter to our safety and security.

Huge turnout in Ann Arbor for the #NoKings rally.

People are turning out to oppose the creeping authoritarianism coming from Republicans.

I came out to stand up for freedom of speech, the right to protest, and to speak against the assault on our Constitution and our values.
