every few weeks, cinépolis drop shockingly high-effort themed lettermarks for new movie releases — they’re always so fun, and showcase strong long-term vision

and these are just the static versions — most are fully-animated renders, and run during screening pre-rolls
The Cinépolis mark stylised to look like the shelves of memories from the ‘Inside Out’ movies — a ‘C’ shape forming two shelves of glowing spherical orbs of varying colours. The Cinépolis mark stylised as a nod to the movie and the musical ‘Wicked’ — a ‘C’ shape, with the top half mimicking the appearance of the character Elphaba (black cloak, witch’s hat, broomstick), and the bottom half Glinda (pink dress, tiara, sparkly wand). The Cinépolis mark stylised as a nod to Star Wars — a ‘C’ shape designed like the Death Star. The Cinépolis mark stylised as a nod to Deadpool & Wolverine — a ‘C’ shape, with the top half mimicking Deadpool’s costume (katanas mounted on red material), and the bottom half Wolverine’s (yellow fabric, with metal claws protruding out).

the old cinépolis logo also had two elements: a nod to film (the strips), and the star (cool, but inessential)

the new one KEPT the nod to film, and bid adieu to the star

BUT it also gained something: a lettermark. the ‘C’ can stand by itself. and as a framing device, it’s been an all-time great

the rebrand keeps the least important element, and not even in a recognisable way, NOR a functional one — alone, it just looks like a spring or a squiggle, and as a framing device, it’s not got the easiest-to-work-with geometry

cinemex’s desire to move away from film strip imagery is (mostly) understandable

but when cinépolis did it (abandoning a cool negative-space star along the way... we all have to make sacrifices) they chipped through the ‘C’ as a nod to film projection — subtle, but so effective

good morning to everyone except the cinemex rebrand

The ‘Cinemex’ wordmark is curvy and slanted, and the tagline beneath says ‘la magia del cine’ — ‘the magic of cinema’. The new Cinemex logo. A thick line forms a spring-like shape that looks sort of like the letter ‘L’ written in lower-case cursive, intended to form the same spherical globe as the old Cinemex logo. The updated ‘Cinemex’ wordmark is still quite heavy, but far less curvy, and no longer italicised. The tagline is removed.

the cinema itself is so, so cool, but that tagline? astounding. and the visual branding, with typography that (quite poetically) straddles the line between the old (classical forms) and the new (the responsive ‘H’ as a framing device, with subtly-animated boil lines no less! look closely)? god-tier.

extremely cool branding/copywriting/cinema/geography thing: a movie theatre that sits on the US/canada border just got a rebrand (by montreal studio ‘harrison fun’), with the tagline:

‘the only cinema in the USA without a screen’

because the seats are in the US, but the screen is canada

the ‘in the heights’ movie adaptation (which, like ‘wicked’, was directed by jon m. chu), did the same thing: passing up the logo that was used in all of the marketing and opting for a title card more closely-inspired by the artwork from the original stage musical

the title card for ‘wicked’, interestingly, eschews the logo that’s been used in all of the marketing (which is based on the logo for the stage musical) in favour of a title treatment that nods to the title card of ‘the wizard of oz’ (1939)

the symmetry in jaguar’s new monogram is cool for like five seconds until you realise it just kinda reads as ‘junior’ 😐
