I got Joel Lane’s The Lost District like 18-19 years ago and proceeded to not read it until last week. Now I feel dumb, because holy shit is it brilliant. It’s like if Aickman was a queer anticapitalist gen-xer. Bleak, but coming from a tender, human place—more frustrated idealism than pessimism.

I dug some of Funeral Oration’s more polished melodic hardcore back in the 90’s, but didn’t hear Communion (1985) until 7-8 years ago. It floored me when I first heard it. Raw, blown out, wall-of-noise, passionate hardcore punk. It’s how I wanted my old band to sound without even realizing it.
