The rewarewa is flowering, with its dramatic nectar filled spiky blooms. Knightia excelsa. One of just two native protaceae species in Aotearoa NZ I believe.

It's this time of year in Aotearoa New Zealand.

I taught people some easy techniques to get out and record their observations in nature. The sun shone and we could hear the river rushing beside us.

UPDATE: the bees are very happy in their new final destination hive box. They are settling in emptying their honey stomachs into the frames and getting to know the garden. Lots of air traffic control - the pollen-laden bees come in low and heavy. In a few weeks we'll add on another box of frames

Wholesome news - we have suburban bees again. Our hive has been empty since the the central Auckland floods. A swarm landed in my neighbour's magnolia tree today and we were ready to grab it in a bucket. Now to wait and see if they stay + are healthy. Early signs are good but hard to say.

Last image completed for my botanical art calendar, this magnificent Euphorbia. And yes, my paintbrush nearly caught in the press. Gorgeous or grotesque? Thinking of calling it 'Mandala' although my son suggests 'Sauron'. Thinks he's smart eh? Thanks to all who ordered and shared 😍 I love yous all.

WHAT?
If she were big enough she'd have you mate. And frankly she may still try.

I teach botanical art at Auckland Wintergardens and they were part of the subject matter for that class Also they are quite beautiful and fascinatingly formed with this strange kind of upside down umbrella part under neath the petals (but yes, stinky!).

Because we can all do with wholesome news, my Red Cabbage painting won the 'People's Choice' award at the recent Botanical Art Worldwide Exhibition at Auckland Botanic Gardens and has been featured on the cover of the Auckland Botanic Gardens Magazine. Nice!

Hear me out - Give Ngutu pare/wrybill your vote for #BOTY. The ONLY birds worldwide with a laterally curved bill! That's a serious kink. Also when they murmurate the whole flock flashes from silver to white, it's spectacular. They are also Bi-landers dividing their time between North and South.
