#IndieAuthors Given, well, everything, I'm going to donate all my book royalties for the remainder of 2025 to my local food bank. If you've got the means, and you're looking for that next great read (for you or the book lover in your life), check out my work. 👇
I studied journalism in college. I was on my school newspaper's editorial board. I spent nearly four years as a newspaper writer before transitioning to media relations, and later, marketing. This ✨️infuriates✨️ me.
Shawn McCreesh, who wrote today's misty water-colored nostalgia story about Jeffrey Epstein's "Lost New York" at NYT, told St. John's j-school students last year that journalism is great because “It gives you this all-access pass to interact with these people we would otherwise never come across.”

Well, I've never come across a happy, fluffy prophecy, so I'm not sure what the difference is. 😅

(Also, a prophecy gestures heavily in my contemporary fantasy, NOTNA.)
Daily Challenge: 19: Prophecy or Curse - Would you rather be subject to a prophecy or curse? Know any indie books that explore either?

A line in Naomi Klein's book Doppleganger I keep thinking back on: "[Conspiracy theorists] get their feelings right, but their facts wrong." They should be angry, but they're angry at the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

That explains lot about where we are, and I'm convinced it's intentional.

A co-worker today said GenAI is causing the "fast food-ification" of creativity, and y'all, I need to sit with that one for a minute. Cause the tea be pipin' hot.

Apparently, I sold a book yesterday.

That's neat.

Let's do it some more. 😅

The biggest problem with "write toward market demand:" writing and publishing a book takes so long that these trends will change before you're finished with your manuscript. If you're trying to hop on the vampire bandwagon, don't be surprised if you publish to a market full of werewolves.

#IndieAuthors I'm working on a second edition of this book. 👇

Why? Because I believe that strongly in the value and importance of reading. Especially if you're the kind of person who lives through words.

I love buying books.

I love it when people buy my books.

But it's high time to rediscover the magic that is my local public library. If you haven't discovered yours, there's no better time than today.

Our libraries are vital. Please support them.

That awkward moment when I'm reading one of my non-fiction manuscripts, and I have to wonder... is there enough here for a book, or would this be better off as a Substack series?

Good article on the targeting of Australian authors by scammers posing as publishing service providers (I've been reporting on these scams since 2022--one of the markers for them is that, unlike other publishing scams, they sell ghostwriting services) www.theguardian.com/books/2025/n...

Book publishing websites in Australia, the UK and New Zealand appear to be using fake testimonials and AI staff pages to lure aspiring writers into handing over their money

You know, seeing just how many on the right are either accused of being, or are actively defending, PDFs is really putting their rampant transphobia in an entirely new light for me. The outright obsession, on all fronts, with children's bodies is... jarring.

Conspiracy theory: the media drummed up the notion to push Joe Biden out of the White House not out of concern for his health or his mental capacity... but because to them, he was too "boring" as president, and that meant bad ratings.

I will never understand people who lack empathy. I cannot grasp how a human being can see another human being suffer and respond with a shoulder shrug or even anger toward the person suffering. Empathy fuels my rage, but only because I know i can't do anything about most of the problems we face.

My rule of thumb: if I didn't reach out to you first, or research you on my own, you're not getting a response. That's email, IG message... any of it.
Lots of folks on Threads are talking about the staggering amount of scammer emails from people pretending to be book clubs, reviewers, and more.

Seems like the endgame is eventually getting you to pay a good chunk of money for promotions and readers that likely don’t exist.

Be careful out there.

One of my favorite songs ever. Also, it kinda makes me want to try my hand at a high fantasy book.

Maybe.

Boosting!
On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?
