Saying "violence never solved anything" isn't the credo of the pacifist. Its the credo of the priviliged who rarely if ever have to face violence. Those who by their comfort can claim pacifism because they were never confronted with violence to have that belief tested.

If in defending yourself from violence, you have to defend yourself, you are not breaking moral beliefs of pacifism. If it does, they weren't strong beliefs. They were weak and you never believed them. You can regret that you had to, but acknowledge that you still had to.

You can be a pacifist and defend yourself. To know how to fight. At its core, pacifism is an opposition of violence as a means of control. War is bad, period, because killing is bad. Because wholesale murder to gain control of a place is REAL bad.

In general most people use Pacifism as a way to pretend their base want of self preservation is a moral stance rather than a biological or mental state. Most people who say violence isn't the answer, are cowards looking to control and manipulate people. They aren't pacifists.
