A tad elaborate and Marian for my tastes, but still, what a beautiful altar. That painting in the middle panel is 15th century, according to the plaque. @flinthill.bsky.social just celebrated a small but serene communion here about an hour ago. Our cathedral in Buffalo is an under-appreciated gem.

Fine water tonight. An eight knot breeze, following. We made about six. Champagne sailing.

Here’s the same fellow baptizing his nephew a few years later. He was rector of an Episcopal parish in San Antonio.

From the National Archives: “Chaplain Louis R. Goodrich, San Antonio, Texas, is conducting services aboard an invasion bound ship.” ⚓️

It gave me chills to read Ps. 31 this morning, appointed for the sixth day of each month, as it occurred to me that many British, Canadian, and American Anglicans in the Allied invasion force would have prayed these words today, 81 years ago, before going ashore at Normandy.

If you don’t like defaulting to your phone when you’re waiting around, try this: get a notebook, write down poems, prayers, or psalms you’d like to memorize, and read those instead. It has helped me commit many things to memory, including treasures like Herbert’s poems.

Pray every day for Peace and Grace. You’ll be surprised what happens.

I had one early-on here who was entertainingly odd.

It is the feast day of George Herbert. In lieu of the Benedictus, I said this poem of his at morning prayer. A meditation on prayer, sure, but surely also a song of praise.

I cannot get over how good this translation is. If you had told me that someone had managed the terza rima in English, I would have scoffed—it’s either bad verse or it is a gibberish translation. Not only did Palma reproduce the rhyme, it’s a good translation of the Italian! Remarkable!

Suppose that in a generation or so, some calamity renders most publishers defunct. What are ten printed books you would stash away for safekeeping? Here are mine.

If Rowan Williams calls it a masterpiece, then by golly you had better read it.

“Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

It’s bitter cold this holiday morning, so I made sausage gravy & biscuits for my wife. This should give us the energy to finally take down our Christmas decorations…

Did Andrewes believe in the perpetual virginity of Mary? I know some prominent reformers did, or were at least open to the possibility, but this is Newman’s translation of Andrewes’ Preces Privatae, and I wonder whether he took liberties here.

Yes, Andrewes is right—what would we ever do without beasts, cattle, and reptiles?

Took it twice and slightly varied my answers. I’m satisfied with both. You’ll note that (per @laudablepractice.bsky.social and others), Old High Church Anglicanism (‘Laudianism lite’) would look “low”to most modern Anglicans, so I don’t see too much incongruity between these outcomes.

I tend to keep a dictionary handy while reading. I might not use it for weeks, but when I need it, it’s there. I do have a compact OED on my desk, which is useful for etymology, but this one here is my favorite one-volume companion. Its definitions are surprisingly witty (and even snarky at times!)

We had too many family and social commitments on Christmas Eve and Day to make a proper supper, but I finally got to it today. Thus I present a St. Stephen’s Day feast, with roasted duck.
