I have to admit anime is not my cup of tea, but you're right that this is the kind of story that's hard to adapt. Animation might solve a lot of the problems and the long running nature of many anime series might be suitable. Plus you know the dragons would look GOOD.

For me the Canon includes Anne McCaffrey, her world building was just incredibly complex. I don't think she's popular anymore.
