Since 2007 I’ve been “jbjon” — a nod to old university days.

But as I focus on engineering leadership and new technology, it’s time to show up as myself.

👉 I’m moving to @jonathanrelf.com

Same curiosity. Same voice. Just… Jonathan.

I am absolutely fine with the government considering raising taxes. The last 20 years of penny pinching, austerity, and the world getting more expensive around us means a lot of things are in a worse state than we should expect. It’s got to come from somewhere. Whether that’s a wealth tax or not.

When Apple get to releasing the M6 chip, the corresponding version of macOS (27+) should be called Spaghetti Junction in a break with the Californian naming convention & for a niche reference alone. 😊

I’m literally not into football.
I’ve often had issues with the England flag & its links to negative behaviour.
But I watch The Lionesses.
And I’m proud of the absolute effort they all put in.
And the pride they’ve restored in how I view my country’s flag.
Bravo ladies. You’ve done it again.

Aren’t they called Hotels? 😅

The current trend for delivery companies to leave your parcels outside your home regardless of security or weather conditions to avoid re-delivery should warrant a new status: Abandoned.
“Derek has Abandoned your parcel at home” because it’s not really delivered until received?

Isn’t legacy software wonderful? I have a bluetooth Brother PT-TOUCH label printer which works well with the iOS app
To use the Numbering option, I need to use the desktop software which insists on a wired link.
So I’m using a USB-C hub to connect via a USB-A to Micro-USB & it’s got bluetooth!

Here’s my issue with #GitHub #Copilot
Instead of feeling like I’m tapping into models trained on public source code on GitHub, it just feels like a shopping list of things I find elsewhere. The naming doesn’t help differentiate why I should use any of them. I want GitHub’s best?

One trouble with aging and seeing some ahead of you in that process is the realisation that a belief or viewpoint I hold now as seemingly normal runs the risk of being quickly outdated or offensive. I hope I retain the open mindedness to continue to learn and grow.

With WH Smith potentially leaving the UK high streets we really do need a rethink about what we do with town centres especially with more remote working.

I’ve seen an advert for an @octopus.energy with a commenter saying it’s not the same as the radiators only get to 50°C. They were told about this but “you don’t know what a difference it makes”
I run my gas boiler at 50°C & adjust my thermostat heating cycles. Have an open mind. Embrace efficiency.

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most elegant.
Once my technical task is completed, I can then upload it to Azure DevOps Wiki so others can benefit.

Happy new year everyone. Remember that whilst many will take the opportunity to proclaim life changing goals today, it’s ok not to. It’s ok to get through today like it’s any other day.
And that every other day you’re lucky enough to be alive has the power to be the start of something new. 💚
