if you want to know how cities value the safety of cyclists take stock of where they install bollards to protect electrical equipment or parking payment terminals and then see how they protect bike lanes

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

If there are Seven Cycling Wonders of the World, then Beijing’s elevated bike expressway deserves to be near the top of that list: a six-metre wide, 5.4-km long piece of show-stopping infrastructure that is quickly become an important form of transportation and recreation for 12,000 users each day.🧵

Why are gift cards even a thing? As I’m decluttering this evening I am so dumbfounded as to who thought I wanted some money but could only spend it at Cheesecake Factory. In total, I may have something like $800 in money that is restricted to certain places. What a weird phenomenon?!

“According to the finance ministry’s calculations, the cost to society of trips by car is close to one euro/km. On the other hand, every km travelled by bike yields societal gains of 60 euro cents thanks to the health benefits of cycling, transport efficiency gains, & lower infrastructure spending.”
What the world can learn from Copenhagen’s cycling revolution
Close to two-thirds of the city’s residents commute by bike to school or work every day.

the progression of AIDS treatment in my lifetime, from how terrifying it was as a child in the 80s to stories like this 40-odd years later, is genuinely one of the human race’s most awe-inspiring scientific achievements. it was a nonnegotiable death sentence for SO LONG
After nearly three decades, a Minnesota summer camp for kids with HIV/AIDS is closing and up for sale... because retroviral drugs are so effective that there aren't enough campers.

Science works, y'all.

From a space for cars to a place for people in one of my favourite client cities, Groningen Netherlands. Another powerful before-and-after transformation 1960s vs 2021.

In recent years one of the city’s biggest challenges has been where to park all the bikes Seriously. A good problem to have.

Next time someone tries arguing that it’s “social engineering” (cue ominous music) to give people CHOICES to walk, bike & take public transit in their city, tell them that designing our current car DEPENDENCY has been the largest and most damaging social engineering experiment in human history.

The Dutch have a saying: 'You are not made of sugar, you won't melt in the rain!'.

When you use a bicycle for practical purposes, the weather becomes less significant. Whether you commute to work on a bicycle, you do so both on sunny days and when it's raining.

Crossing the street as a pedestrian can be treacherous in Milwaukee. I’m grateful for all the traffic calming improvements being installed but notice a lack of RRFBs (flashing lights). Are they expensive or just not as effective as I feel they are? The times I’ve used them they seem very effective

Walk more. You see your community and interact with others differently when you’re on foot.

Volunteer. Anything where you’re working with others toward a common goal.

Become an election worker (paid or volunteer).

Report problems (potholes, signs down, etc.). Don’t assume someone else will.
