I mean, as I understand it Patterson takes an active role in plotting the books, and then the editing after. He's the showrunner in a book packaging concern, basically (to mix entertainment metaphors). He's not the only one doing that out there, just the most successful.
Have you tried hiring a team of ghost writers and not actually doing anything? Worked for James Patterson :-)
