A jazz celebration.
Back to the late 70s with Garland Jeffreys and the 80s with Carmel. Had them once taped on cassette, ages ago.

6/ In the 1950s Alfred Lazaryan was a musician and dance teacher who is credited with the first Iranian jazz (like) song, ‘Venus’. I exhausted my partner and her Iranian contacts with requests to help me find the song, but to no avail.
More luck via #MusicSky?

2/ Though it became increasingly dangerous for (jewish) jazz musicians to perform during the nazi occupation, she kept playing in public. Not willing to hide, she was eventually arrested. Carla de Vries was murdered #OTD in Auschwitz 1942, 27 years old.

Such a pity. A (fusion) jazz scene is emerging in Iran and in the Iranian diaspora in Europe and North America. And yet, somebody thinks it's okay to 'jazzify' traditional tunes with bl**dy AI rather than promoting established and upcoming Iranian fusion jazz musicians 😭😭😭

4/ “A bridge from bebop to the avant-garde, [Sonny Rollins] is a lasting link to the golden age of jazz, pictured in the iconic "Great Day in Harlem" portrait.”
(From Aidan Levy’s Saxophone Colossus: The Life and Music of Sonny Rollins, 2023)

2/ Charles Barnet’s private life seems to have been more exciting than his musical career. “Barnet not only played jazz, he lived the jazz life: ... he writes of his whiskey and marijuana habits, of his whorehouse visits and his half-dozen marriages.”
He passed away #OTD in 1991.

1/ This typical but lovely promo picture is in itself enough reason to include drummer Anton Lada and his band in this series of jazz celebrations.

1/ I’m fairly new to the genre and that’s why I started this account a month ago. I wanted to learn more about jazz history and its musicians, the absolute giants and the less glorified but still glorious jazz artists on either side of the Atlantic.

5/ I normally don't read biograpohies, but I 'm curious about De Barros' 'Shall we play that one together? The life and art of jazz piano legend Marian McPartland' (which arrived #OTD).

Heroes of Jazz, the story of jazz music in the Netherlands.
Texts in Dutch, obviously, but nothing a decent online translation tool cannot handle.

Het verhaal van de Nederlandse Jazz, een initiatief van het Nederlands Jazz Archief.
