1/ Pia Beck was a Dutch pianist and singer who started her career after WWII. Her first composition ‘Pia’s Boogie’ became an instant hit in the Low Countries. She toured Europe and the US and got praise from Oscar Peterson.

1/ It’s difficult to imagine a Swing Jazz Era without Tommy Dorsey. He was a trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader. After his break up with brother Jimmy, Tommy’s orchestra was incredibly successful from the 1930s way into the 1950s.

1/ Francis Paudras was a Parisian jazz enthusiast. He befriended Bill Evans and took care of Bud Powell when he suffered from TB. Paudras interviewed and recorded Powell (and Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie a.o.).

Frank Rosolino was a trombonist who played in Gene Krupa’s and Stan Kenton’s big bands. In the 1960s and 70s he worked with Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Quincey Jones a.o. After a troubled life he passed tragically away in 1978 OTD.

Trombonist Floyd O'Brien started his career in the 1920s. He recorded with Fats Waller, Mezz Mezzrow, worked with Gene Krupa, Bob Crosby a.o. (NY), Jack Teagarden, Wingy Manone (LA) and Bud Freeman in Chicago. O’Brien passed away OTD in 1968.

Allan Botschinsky was a Danish trumpeter, composer and arranger. In the 1950s he played with touring musicians such as Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Lee Konitz a.o. He recorded extensively as bandleader and sideman. Botschinsky passed away OTD in 2020.

Clifford Thornton was a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. He was known for his explorations in free and avant-garde jazz. He arranged for Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner and recorded with Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders a.o. Thornton died OTD in 1989.

Chico Hamilton was a drummer who worked with Lester Young, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie a.o.
As a bandleader he explored subgenres such as cool jazz, post bop and jazz fusion. Hamilton passed away OTD in 2013.

Robert Byrne was a bandleader, trombonist and music executive. He played with the Dorsey Brothers. In between starting two of his own big bands he flew aircraft in WWII. Byrne died OTD in 2006.

Eric(h) Vogel was a Czech trumpeter who organised a jazz school in the Brno Jewish ghetto. He was arrested, but escaped during the transport to Dachau. In 1946 he moved to the US where he died in 1980, date unknown.

Sten Hasselgård was a Swedish clarinetist in the US who started in the swing idiom. He shifted to bebop in the late 1940s, but died in a car accident OTD in 1948, only 26 years old.

Uffe Baadh was a Danish drummer who fled nazi occupied Denmark via Sweden and ended up in the US playing in Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra. He later recorded with Elvis Presley, Henry Mancini a.o. Uffe Baadh, a.k.a. Frank Bode, passed away OTD in 1980.

1/ Jon Hendricks was trained and accompanied by Art Tatum. During WWII he was shot at by Germans in Normandy and by southern US officers in the rest of France.

Joy Marshall was a US singer who mainly worked in the US, The Netherlands, but mainly in the UK. She had quite some success in the local jazz scene and even scored a Top 40 hit. OTD in 1968 she was found dead in her London flat.

Ralph Burns was a pianist, composer and arranger who worked with Lee Konitz and Ben Webster, with Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and many others. Burns died OTD in 2001. 3 years later he was inducted to the New England Jazz Hall of Fame.
