Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. - Benjamin Franklin

Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the one right which they first of all strike down. —Frederick Douglass

On the plus side, I’ve spent some quality time with my new Switch 2 since around 1:30 this morning.

Power attracts the corruptible. Suspect all who seek it... We should grant power over our affairs only to those who are reluctant to hold it and then only under conditions that increase that reluctance.

- Frank Herbert

Late summer, Margate. On the porch, with two very good dogs (not shown), a cup of frosé (testing out a new recipe), the torches going, and The Beach Boys for ambient sound. Good God, I do love this life.

One would have expected two Labs to have been more enthusiastic about going swimming on a hot summer day. On the other hand, they are awfully lazy…

So I’m down the Shore for the 4th and some much needed disengagement from many cares, and I know that there is a lot seriously wrong with this country, but people who walk away from - or are looking down at their phones during- fireworks have no soul.

So maybe Baloo is more food-motivated than I first thought. A can of Pringles fell out of the car, the contents spilling everywhere, mostly under the car. I’ve never seen a dog move faster.

I’ve spent years trying to coax some of the flora from home into growing properly in The Garden State. My dogwood is doing quite well, but I can’t for the life of me get the azaleas to to adapt, even though the neighbors have yards full of them. Sigh.

Ahhhh, Chicago. How I’ve missed you!

Doug Ford may be on to something. Aside from enraging the “President” (something I think we all enjoy seeing), what if Ontario Hydro stopped selling electricity to NY this summer, when it mattered?

Here are nine words you never thought you’d see strung together in a sentence: German soccer match cancelled after child bites referee’s testicle.

If German weren’t the first word in the sentence, I’d have guessed Florida.

So… being of a somewhat libertarian bent, I can’t in good conscience say that I’m a fan of the everything about the EU. But I can say that we need a lot more Kaja Kallas. I fear (know) that her judgment about the need for new leadership is spot on and I know (and fear) that nobody here is listening.

Press for Champagne…

I did. At least twice. Maybe more?

Flying over Newfoundland now, just passed St Pierre and Miquelon on the right. The moving map looks like a list of Great Big Sea song titles and lyrics- St. John’s, Bonavista, Harbour le Cou, Carbonear. Miss those guys…

Back to London- it’s been a while. I feel like Buckner walking back into Shea, but I mean to exorcise some ghosts this trip and reclaim all my old familiar places for myself. I suspect there will be some drinking involved, but these things need to happen from time to time.

Mmmm… unexpected Two Boots. Just randomly walked past it on 71st Street and boom! - an OK morning turns into an outstanding mid-day. Best slices in NYC, though I’ll concede that my opinion may be unorthodox.

Now I’m starting to worry that there’s too many food posts in my feed…

Oh my god I’m at the most amazing Wawa. In Brick NJ of all places. It has a Panera for some reason. And cheese pizza flavored Cheetos right next to the freestyle machine. Did I die? Am I in … heaven?

Well, I’m officially old. After dinner, I was handed a slice of birthday cake and literally reacted exactly like Hyman Roth in Godfather II - I waved at the plate with a slightly trembling hand and said “smaller slice”. Soon I’ll be eating dinner at 4:30 in the afternoon.

55 today. Ugh. I always thought I’d die at 33, like Jesus did. But, hey, on the bright side, I apparently now qualify for the seniors discount on my cell service.
