TIL: Bandon was jokingly referred to as 'Southern Derry' in the 1830s given the prominence of Orangeism and its former walls from the Munster Plantation.

I am reading a (very good) article and it has used to the word 'essay' as a verb twice and ...I've never seen the word 'essay' as a verb.

Lord Shannon received £15,000 as compensation for loss of rotten borough of Clonakilty following the Act of Union.
£15,000 = ~£1.7 million in today's money. That doesn't seem like **that** much relative to the money thrown around in politics. How do we account for purchasing power? 🗃️

A petition presented to parliament in August 1835, of a parish priest calling out a voter from the pulpit for selling their vote, and entreating the parish not to do any business with him (aka - a boycott).
Of course, knew this practice happened regularly, but never seen a petition about it. 🗃️
