It's Sartre's Portrait of the Anti-Semite all the way down. For fascists and for reactionaries of most stripes, politics is about wielding power. Not taking argumentation and fact seriously, ignoring the pursuit of truth and communion, is a display of power that makes them feel superior.
A text quote from Sartre's Portrait of the Anti-Semite: “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies.
