University of Arizona now also rejects, albeit in a very conciliatory manner. No comments about academic freedom, just concern that preferential treatment by the government would be anti-merit.

7 out of the 9 initially contacted universities have now said no.

The White House has responded to USC's decision to not sign the president's education compact. A Trump spokesperson said: "As long as they are not begging for federal funding, universities are free to implement any lawful policies they would like." www.latimes.com/california/s...

NEW - White House spokesperson responds: “As long as they are not begging for federal funding, universities are free to implement any lawful policies they would like. However, the notion that universities should benefit from taxpayer money without responsibilities in return is terribly misguided.”
