Charles H. Owens, a mid-century illustrator for the @latimes.com, is best known for the vivid maps he made during World War II that illuminated key battles. But he also penned maps of CA and beyond. When I found this rare one from 1940, it was in tatters. Glad to finally have it restored.

In an office tower a half mile from the parade, you’d never know there’d just been a Dodgers celebration. A sleepy lobby cafe was unloading bruised bananas on a pair of a besuited men and security guards lazed on stools. But outside, blue confetti fell from the sky like a secret.

The parade is over and Dodger fans are walking the team’s confetti-strewn route through downtown. The familiar sights and sounds of nearly any large L.A. gathering are here: the hot dog vendors, people sorting through trash to collect cans for recycling, and the insistent churn of choppers overhead.

The vibes at the #Dodgers parade were wholly positive: the only act of disobedience (if it could be called that) visible from one vantage point was a handful of people climbing on top of a KTLA news van. They were only trying to get a better view of the parade and soon dispersed.

The last time I saw the 101 Freeway totally empty through DTLA it was February — and an intense immigration rally had shut down the roadway. Today, Dodger fans are lining an overpass as they wait for the team’s buses to drive by.
