Some good points in this essay, but why echo and normalise the Maga-ish framing of 'hard left' for what is acknowledged in the essay as 'middle of the road'? America is not Europe, obviously, but this seems self-contradictory.

Just finished @kristianulrichsen.bsky.social's 'Centers of Power in the Arab Gulf States', and can highly recommend it. The layered, thematic approach provides a range of vantage points for analysing how power is held and exercised - and puts this in historical/regional context. Very helpful.

That raises the question: How much did this humanitarian aid really cost? For the most expensive fiscal year, 2022, the American government spent over $2 billion for the entirety of the drought response. That means it cost the average American household roughly $6 a year in taxes to prevent about half as many deaths as occurred in the Holocaust. It sounds absurd to justify something so self-evidently humane. And in the end, I don’t believe individual Americans would believe it even needs justification. For any of our faults, we are not so small a people as to refuse such a financial and moral bargain.

Event flyer, including abstract: In 2019, a people’s revolution ended the thirty-year reign of Sudan’s military president Umar al-Bashir. A transitional government took power, led by esteemed international economist Abdalla Hamdok and promising a return to civilian rule. But Sudan’s new government quickly imposed a shock therapy programme of cuts, privatisations and devaluation, following the diktat of foreign lenders. In 2021, as Sudan grew poorer, the army seized on popular discontent to launch a coup, burying hopes for a democratic transition. But why did Sudan’s first civilian government in more than a quarter-century bend to the will of creditors at this crucial moment in the country’s history? The answer lies in an unwieldy and unpayable debt burden that has long constricted Sudanese politics and society. Undoing a Revolution narrates the history of sovereign debt in Sudan from independence to the present, revealing the innovative policies adopted by Sudanese governments to manage their place in the global economy. But it also shows how external actors have leveraged the power of debt to impose their will and wreak havoc. With Sudan embroiled in civil war since 2023, Harry Cross explores the political implications of sovereign debt for states and societies across Africa, and around the world.

Flyer for event, including abstract: This quantitative study analyzes access to basic services among refugees and host communities in Kenya’s Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement—establishing the levels of access between refugees and hosts, identifying disparities between Kakuma and Kalobeyei, and modelling how much more needs to be done in terms of investments in service delivery infrastructure (important with respect to the Shirika Plan framework for integrated service delivery). The study draws on Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and World Bank–Kenya datasets. The first level of analysis examines whether access to services is related to displacement status (for refugees and hosts) or location (for refugees) based on chi-square tests of independence. The second level analyzes the extent of disparities in access, if any, using descriptive statistics. The third level focuses on the gaps and models what more can be done, using regressions. Preliminary results show that refugees were doing better on most fronts—birth notification, delivery in health facilities, school enrolment rates, water source and human waste disposal—while nationals had better access to economic opportunities, fuel for cooking and fuel for lighting. Access to services is better in Kakuma than Kalobeyei.

Flyer for the seminar, including abstract: For a century, the Ethiopian city Jigjiga was known as a dusty hub of cross-border smuggling and a hotbed of rebellion on Ethiopia’s eastern frontier. After 2010, it transformed into a post-conflict boomtown, becoming one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities and attracting Somali return-migrants from across the globe. This study examines Jigjiga’s astonishing transformation through the eyes of its cross-border traders, urban businesspeople, and officials. Daniel K. Thompson follows traders and return-migrants across borders to where their lives collide in the city. Analysing their strategies of mobility and exchange, this study reveals how Ethiopia’s federal politics, Euro-American concerns about terrorism, and local business aspirations have intertwined to reshape links between border-making and city-making in the Horn of Africa. To understand this distinctive brand of urbanism, Thompson follows globalized connections and reveals how urbanites in Africa and beyond participate in the ‘urban borderwork’ of constructing, as well as contesting, today’s border management regimes.

Poster with seminar details, including this abstract: The Climate Mobility, Onward Precarity and Urban Environment (CEMENT) project investigates how climate change shapes human mobility among smallholder farming families in Ethiopia. Moving beyond the narrow idea of ‘climate refugees’, CEMENT adopts the concept of climate mobilities—capturing diverse, short- and long-term, voluntary and forced movements influenced by climate change, socio-economic inequality, and family dynamics. Through a multi-sited, gender-sensitive ethnographic study in two regions of Ethiopia—Sidama Region and Gamo Zone—the project explores how climate uncertainty redefines mobility as an adaptive strategy, not merely a reaction to crisis. Key findings reveal that mobility is deeply embedded in family life and structured by gender, age, peer networks, and land ownership. Women are emerging as active agents in mobility decisions—both by resisting male outmigration and pursuing independent movement. The project combines climate data with life course interviews to understand how climate interacts with economic pressures and social norms. CEMENT aims to reframe public and policy narratives on climate migration with nuanced, empirical insight. In this seminar, I will share key findings from the CEMENT project and reflect on their implications for understanding climate mobilities in Ethiopia.

Flyer with seminar details. Abstract: The Somali and Gambella regions host about 70% of the 1.1 million refugees in Ethiopia. The two regions are also known for protracted displacement but also an ever-increasing number of refugees. Currently, with a dramatic decline in the resource allocation for humanitarian and development from major donors, refugee hosting governments are grappling with uncertainties over the future of people in displacement. The need for transition from a ‘care and maintenance’ approach to engagement in sustainable livelihoods and working towards ‘self-reliance’ is more vital than ever before. This requires, besides favourable national policies, an understanding of the critical significance of local contexts. Based on fieldwork among the displacement-affected communities in the Somali and Gambella regions, in this presentation I will discuss the complex local contexts that enable or constrain refugees’ local integration and paths to ‘self-reliance’.

Some of the big questions that the panelists will ask include: what do the region’s many wars reveal about wider political economy dynamics in the region?
