These are California native big leaf maples. They like to grow in riparian areas, aka near rivers or creeks, in this case the upper Arroyo Seco (near the headwaters). 🍁

I am a product of food stamps/SNAP.
They helped my family make the most basic of ends meet.
It allowed both my mom and me to level up in the world.
I can hardly think of a program more essential to fulfilling the American dream and to common human decency than this.

Supporting SNAP/food stamp benefits for people who are in need, struggling to make ends meet, children, elderly, disabled…
That is exactly what Jesus would do.
And yet some “Christian” politicians are cutting food budgets in half as we speak.

More than all that…we are talking about people.
When I was growing up on food stamps I was also growing up going to Sunday School, learning about Jesus who helped the needy and fed the poor.
We also visited church food banks growing up, but it was never enough for our whole family.

For every $1 spent on SNAP, the economy gets back $1.60 because of the “multiplier effect”.
But since I was a kid on food stamps, I have an even wilder number: for every $1 spent on a *kid* in SNAP (1-5yo), the economy gets back $62. That is a shockingly GOOD investment.

40% of today’s SNAP benefit recipients are kids, just like I was growing up.
Without it I likely would have still tried hard in school, but it would have been harder for me to do so, hungry every morning waiting for that free lunch in the cafeteria.

And what food stamps meant for me:
I worked as hard as I could in school because my mom worked hard to give me that opportunity. And we had food at home for dinner. Now I’m the first with a masters degree in my family, and I’m an educator teaching kids and adults to build a better future.

So this is what food stamps meant for my family:
*Barely enough support to put food on the table.
*Extreme monitoring every step of the way.
*But also an extreme lesson in the value of work.
*And just enough cushion for my mom to make a better life for herself and all of us.

Once my brothers and I were old enough, my mom started taking night classes, eventually getting her Associates degree right around the same time I left for college. She finally got a job at the county with benefits, health insurance, a retirement, and a livable wage.

I was acutely aware of all this growing up, always worried about her and doing what I could to help. But I was a child who didn’t usually know how to. What I was definitely taught though was the ethics of hard work. Food stamps were part of that, not as a hand out, but a hand up.

Between all those jobs, 3 wild boys, school projects & homemade costumes, growing veggies, and the constant avalanche of paperwork for food stamps and medicaid, she was always working. Stacks of paperwork on the side of her bed that should have been for a step-dad, but she had no time to date.

Home was with my single mom and 2 brothers. She worked her ass off cleaning houses, ironing shirts, child/elder care. That plus child support was barely enough for my mom to make ends meet, so we also got support from food stamps.
