If you stand here today you will be in a large parking lot at an unimaginative strip mall. Beginning in the late 1960s the "development bomb" landed in downtown Anaheim, wiping out much of what you see here, replacing memorable buildings with boring strip malls.

If there was no Mitla Café there is a good chance there never would have been a Taco Bell. Opened in 1937 by Lucia Rodriquez it was an extremely popular spot. Across the street was Bell Hamburgers, run by Glen Bell. Bell infamously, with deceit, befriended the family and stole their taco recipe.

In addition to the state's formal acknowledgment of its seismic hazard, the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake disproved the notion, much of it pushed by real estate interests and Southern Pacific Railroad, "that earthquakes like San Francisco don't happen down south."
