Our lab retreated from the craziness of the world for a day (and night) to spend time together in nature. Camping at Lake Del Valle.

Highly recommend this memoir by the son of Dr. Héctor Abad Gomez, public health physician & human rights advocate who was murdered by government-backed paramilitaries. A model of conviction & courage in face of powerful oppression. So relevant for our times. thank you @yiranliu.bsky.social

I'm struggling to choose a favorite line from the report but this image of this guy with no medical training following a kid around the room with an ultrasound wand is just too much

The vaccine-autism peddler whom HHS hired to conduct a study on this non-question lacks a graduate/medical degree and was disciplined by the Maryland State Medical Board for practicing medicine without a license. Here are some examples of what he was doing. www.mbp.state.md.us/BPQAPP/order...

A great history of the Alaska TB epidemic, where rates among its indigenous population were among the highest in the world, and the public health response which mitigated but did not eliminate TB there (still highest incidence in US). Also the title quote 🔥, feels so apt today. #WorldTBDay

The U.S. has among the greatest examples of public health response to TB in history (fig). The 1st TB drug was developed here, 1st scalable rapid molecular test, first trials of preventive therapy. TB elimination is achievable, but it isn't inevitable. It requires support of science & public health

Stand Up For Science in Palo Alto was 🔥 today!
March 7, 2025 at 11:05 PM
I'll be standing up for science tomorrow in Palo Alto in solidarity with scientists and advocates around the country and world, because science is among the most important endeavors of humankind and we must protect and support it.

We developed a simple, inexpensive, colorimetric assay based on detection of S. Typhi-specific phages, which are more abundant and easily detectable. Our latest preprint describes this assay & application in 4 countries. Happy to share reagents & make this accessible. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Yasmine Mabene presented her work on TB treatment outcomes among people who are transferred or released from prison while on treatment. We found high rates of loss to follow up in both groups, identifying a need for measures to support individuals during these transitions. #TBSky

I'm suffering severe FOMO as 5 team members are presenting at the TB Union meeting & I couldn't make it this year. At least there are photos! Here's Argita presenting longitudinal cohort of TB risk in prisons, revealing x-ray abnormalities are a strong predictor of incident TB dx (unlike symptoms!)

One of the hardest parts of academia is the constant coming and going--saying goodbye to our beloved trainees after working so closely together. In the past two weeks, we had send-offs for Izabela Rezende and Yiran Liu as they move onwards & upwards to the next stage in their careers.

For that paper we used a Bayesian hierarchical model relating notifications and data on observed TB incidence and prevalence, full details in the appendix, but here is the key structure for incidence

Mike Frick from gave an amazing talk on advocacy and the right to science: "protection through research rather than protection from research." What this is all about

We had an incredible meeting in Rio to discuss inclusion of persons deprived of liberty in TB vaccine trials. So many great presentations on ethical and scientific considerations, WHO & MoH policies for vaccine prioritization, community engagement & advocacy. @juliocroda.bsky.social
