Spotted a pair of giant (for Japan) pumpkins a bit over a week ago at Marui. Kept planning to tell my wife but repeatedly forgot. She came and helped at the shop today and I remembered. Both were still there. 780 yen. Probably a better deal than we could get in the US without a drive to a farm.

Don't think I've ever had this problem before.
Plugged in hand mixer. Big popping noise. Set it down on my scale instead of the stainless steel counter refrigerator. Another popping noise (capacitance or residual short). Instantly the cable self-severed.
2000 yen doesn't buy durability I guess

1. I guess "mini fat man's" is better than the old name, N-word Kiss (or the very slightly toned down racism of Moor's Heads)
2. (Probably) Filipino version of Sun Chips, a sort of holy grail of MSG-laden snacks for when potatoes are too boring

People in the US in the last 15 years: "you can't just randomly combine different Asian flavors. It's disrespectful to the source cuisine."
Japan: hold my beer. Here's some tom yum mala tan noodles. Enjoy your Chinese Thai Japanese chain restaurant fusion

Ok but now I'm halfway home anyway and I definitely did not want to repeat this morning's 2 hour bus ride

Current status: walking 5km, somewhat glad i didn't succumb to the idea of taking a taxi home now that I've passed scores of cars and a dozen or two cabs.

Love shallots. Easier to find young shallots than the bulbs in Japan. But they do exist.
I used to get'em around $4/lb (9/kg or 1400 yen/kilo at current exchange rates in Seattle. So it feels expensive but maybe not so different?
I used to joke "always buy the shallots" to a French friend in Japan

Salus.jp has a feature on Mizonokuchi restaurants that features my shop. It's a monthly free magazine distributed at train stations operated by Tokyu and just came out today.
Coincidentally, today was the first decent sales day I've had in August. Can't credit the article, alas. Marui was closed.

Nearby there's a Taiwanese daufua and kakigori place which was my wife's main goal for leaving the house today so we went there before dinner.

Had a nice birthday dinner for my wife at Formosa in Takatsu with my younger son (the older one never wants to go out unless he's picking the joint). I've had this place on my list for ages but more as a dinner spot than for lunch, as it's not super veg friendly at lunch, even with my compromises.

The first one looks like 吹 but the second one doesn't quite match 抜 to me. Looks more like 束 but not quite. But as you said, illegible.
I see a fair amount of perplexed people online trying to translate the concept of 吹き抜け(sometimes written 吹抜け).

Yesterday's sales were particularly brutal for a Thursday. Today's I would not call good, but trending above yesterday and last Thursday. Let's hope this doesn't completely kill the traffic the rest of the day.

You won't believe how much of a pain in the ass it was to enter a Japanese address as profile Metadata. I had to switch phone language to Japanese because they kept insisting on a US postal code. And it still formats it weirdly.

Just thought I'd search for some Ideas for Tuesday specials.
Google AI, go home, you're drunk. Though I am tempted by the idea.
