➡️ Absences in any school year are harmful for GCSE achievement.
➡️ Absences in years 1 and 6-10 are particularly harmful.
➡️ Both authorized (e.g., illness) and unauthorized (e.g., truancy) absences have similar negative effects.

Using harmonized longitudinal data, we find a stronger growth of SES-achievement gaps in secondary school in Germany and England than in France and the US. Country differences can largely be attributed to between school differences, whereas within school differences are similar across countries.
