To illustrate this complexity, here is a figure from Nishikawa et al. (2023) with the recent M6.8 earthquake added as a yellow star. This event is located just North of the Tohoku-Oki rupture and possibly within the 1992 ultraslow Sabrina-Oki earthquake. ⚒️🧪

I generated a quick map for the current earthquake sequence near Japan, in a complex area of the subduction zone (or maybe it’s only considered complex because it is so well instrumented…) ⚒️

I realize this is turning into a fall colors account, but I’m still pretty excited about experiencing real seasons, so here is one more! 🍁🍂

We went to Arco over the weekend for the fall foliage and the Rockmaster climbing and bouldering festival. Both were very enjoyable!

For comparison, I have attached a tectonic map of this tectonically complicated region from Schellart et al. (2023) with the recent earthquake shown as a small purple star.

Catching up on a few earthquakes this evening. The M7.6 Drake passage earthquake yesterday appears to have been an intraplate strike slip faulting #earthquake , unlike the M7.4 earthquake a few months ago in the greater area, which was subduction related. ⚒️🧪

Another beautiful sunrise this morning!

Nobody here cares about F1, but even less about #motoGP ! But sometimes when the world is going crazy, you want to watch motorcycles go very fast. And Misano is a good place to do that.

Today’s M7.4 aftershock of the Kamchatka #earthquake was located in the Northern section of the mainshock rupture, where most aftershocks (in pink/purple) and foreshocks occurred. This event was also an interface thrust earthquake, but slip was concentrated at a greater depth. ⚒️🧪
