I show that voters look for commonalities they share with candidates. These could be experiences, emotions, or identities, but they all suggest that a politician can put him or herself in the shoes of the voter.

Considering the centrality issues of "candidate character" often play in campaign messaging, the book's central question is: What kind of cues do voters use to differentiate "aloof" or "unfeeling" candidates from the ones who seem to be able to "feel our pain"?
