Our results show that zoning non-compact areas is associated with more wind power expansion, c. p. (=given the same total designated area). This is explained by the micrositing of wind turbines. A non-compact area likely provides more available turbine sites than a compact area of the same size.👇

Based on georeferenced data of spatial plans of all German regional planning authorities ("Regionale Planungsverbände") between 2000 and 2016, we show that the amount, but also the size and shape of designated areas influence the expansion of wind power.
