A similar logic applies to taxing businesses on how much profit they make, not how they make it, when addressing environmental issues/externalities. There's $9k of activity behind the $1k of profit which delivers $200 of tax. $200 won't fix $9k of pollution; you need to tax the pollution directly.

Those are not downstream from technologies in point of fact even though tech oligarchs desperately want us to believe they are. They know things can be rejected at the level of customs & norms—that’s why they lean SO hard on advertising to get buy in & fake narratives of inevitability early on.

Technologies, even widespread ones, do not *necessarily* determine social norms and goods. If you can’t stop a social harm on the level of force/physical coercion (technology) you can often stop it on the level of consensus (custom, norms, law, governance).

The lock & door technologies most people use—not all but vast majority—aren’t really protecting your home. What is protective is the social contract that says we don’t bust into each other’s homes & steal property just because it’s a simple, lucrative thing to do that’s usually easy to get away with
