Together with my coauthor, Jason Link, we cover not only why EBM is necessary, but also how it can be applied. This book aims to contribute to the development and implementation of EBM, refute myths, and encourage action 🌊⚖️

Ocean14Capital & the Blue Marine Foundation were founded by the same people. BMF funded the premiere & events related to the film & used it to launch their anti-trawling campaign. People associated with Ocean are also associated with Ocean14Capital. All the info & connections are on their websites.

4/4 But it's important to remember that when drawing conclusions from Ocean. You have only been shown one point of view in this opinion-piece film #OceanChat

3/4 It is not told from a neutral perspective (like a documentary). It's funded by lobbyists with an agenda. I.e., Ocean is partly funded by Ocean Capital 14, a venture capital group who invests in aquaculture (a competitor to wildcaught fisheries). That's fine, most people have an agenda #OceanChat

2/4 The way they use sound and light to convey the heros (narrators) and villains (industrialized trawlers) in this film is just like a hollywood blockbuster. This is not a neutral documentary #OceanChat

1/4 My takeaways: Some beautiful footage, some cool facts, a lot of sensationalism and one-sided views presented. Let's not forget that this is an entertainment film featuring a celebrity for a streaming service. #OceanChat

As marine ecosystems are interconnected and complex, loss of biodiversity if often due to a compound of reasons. Some of them are ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing, habitat loss, increasing temperatures leading to species distribution shifts, more competition, etc.

We all want functional and resilient ecosystems that can provide essential ecosystem services for environmental, economic, and social wellbeing. Therefore will always be tradeoffs but treating issues as black/white & banning one stakeholder group (e.g., bottom trawling) isn't the way #OceanChat

Also, it's hard to know whether MPAs actually achieve their conservation objectives. Area closures and banning fishing are not the only tools available for the protection of biodiversity and sustainable ocean use. #OceanChat

Managing social-ecological systems is complex and requires participation from all stakeholders. Forced top-down approaches tend to be less successful. You need to manage social-ecological systems in an ecosystem-based way with all stakeholders included. #OceanChat

The point is, there are nuances to every case, and a one size fits all type of approach might do more harm than good to the local communities who rely on the MPA and surrounding areas. #OceanChat

2/2 If the MPA has rocky habitat and the objective is to protect that habitat, then yes, banning bottom trawling in that area will help achieve that objective #OceanChat

1/2 Banning bottom trawling in all MPAs isn't necessarily going to improve the MPA. Why was the MPA created? What's the goal of the MPA? Simplified example: if the objective of the MPA is to reduce pollution, then banning bottom trawling isn't going to help achieve that objective. #OceanChat
