There's a squeak in the floor when I shift the laundry from the washer to the dryer, and it brings me comfort-a quiet connection to the family who built this home and raised their kids here. We bought this house from a grieving widow and her young adult children after her husband died of cancer far too young. Chris was diagnosed six months later. I still come across spare parts around the house, meticulously labeled, and I feel like he's taking care of me too. • JANICE BELL
