Hellscape same as you. Otherwise everything is fine. Making the last batch of cider

Just caught the tail end of a flyby from a bald eagle. A pair was hunting nearby, judging by the crows.

We trained our little rescue to kayak this summer. Too much fun

Sweetest little girl ever!

We found our rescue 9 years ago. She was 10 months. Same as you, never leaves my side. But ferociously protective of both myself and my wife. If I stretch or raise my arms near my wife she intervenes. And visa versa. 😂 Was clearly abused and can tell a bad guy in a sec

A few sweet American chestnuts. All going to sprout. Seems drought affected.

Wow! Amazing apples this year. I only use a coddle moth trap of molasses and water. But no blemishes, few worm holes. But here’s the thing. The traps are empty. Even for the few unlucky insects who also get trapped. Nothing. Zero. Nada. No bugs

My Amish friend mowing the last of the crops with his team. Mixed thoughts on the Amish. They abhor cars so that’s great. Sadly they are deep into human exceptionalism, misogyny and capitalism. Still, it’s another country in their presence, another language, another world.

Grakles migrating. Sound only as they are in the trees prior to leaving.

See what I can save after the frost

That one was planted in 2006, the tag is still on it, but not by me. It was here when we purchased the place. Apples can certainly take time. There are old orchards and countless wild apples growing around here as well. The sweetest by far are the crab apples. This one is candy.

The Duchess variety does not disappoint. A baking apple. Not time for cider yet.

We’re at Deadpool. On the bright side I can finish the stone work.

An immature red-eyed vireo struck a window. She made it for now.

Drought. Wild Carrot and Autumn Hawkbill line the paths I mowed twice this year. Looks like a crop of Golden Rod outside the fence. Pollinators and grasshoppers are the only insects I see. Stung 4 times in 4 days.

Here’s a nice chokecherry, prunus virginiana

Always throw your clothes in the dryer after being outside. I strip and shower immediately. We keep these handy. Typically I pull 2 or 3 a day

Picked up 40ml from this monster low, finally moving out

If you are so inclined I highly recommend the Maple Sugar Book

Even then we finish up on the stove, check density and bottle above 180F

219.7 lol. It’s all about the heat. Usually takes me 8-10 hours to get to syrup. By then the fire bricks are hot and it’s steady after that

These are mostly red maple. These are running sweeter than your typical hard maple that typically runs between 2.5 and 1.5 sugar.
