Mending what you have is always more sustainable and cheaper than simply throwing them away and getting new ones. Especially with hand knit socks, I want to preserve them as long as possible!

Fabric was expensive and this was a beautiful way to mend what you already had to save money & preserve precious clothing/blankets. Some garments have survived for decades or even a hundred years, w/ many patches & panels of stitching.

I’m making a couple other pairs of pants that are too short into cut offs, and so I used pieces of the leftover legs to mend these ones.

The technique is called sashiko, a Japanese form of mending and embroidery that came about due to extreme poverty during the Edo period.

Thank you! I’m currently working on a cardigan I promised to make for my husband several months ago, but I have many many projects on my list now 😅

I still have many more scraps, but this sweater is sooo warm and cozy and I love the little bits of fun colors. I wear it all the time!

White yarns: knitpicks palette in bare and knitpicks simply wool in Wanda held together. Plus many random scraps from other projects!

A lot of fabric was from store remnants, project remnants, or random bits I had lying around. Actually, these triangles were going to be a basic block quilt, but I didn’t want to make that after cutting all the pieces and instead cut the squares into triangles and made this lol.

The backing is soft yellow flannel. The quilting was done entirely by hand, although I did use a sewing machine to piece the top and do some other finishing. The batting is a thinner cotton but it’s still very cozy due to the flannel.

The pattern is called “Broken Dishes” and from what I can tell is a pretty traditional one. Alternating “light” and “dark” half-square triangles gives a consistent visual effect, although I made one mistake on positioning a quilt block. Hats off to you if you can find it!
