REDSHIFT She is sitting on the curb, watching flames engulf the house across the street. Her arms are wrapped around her knees. The house has been burning for six years. She knew the family that had lived there— they're fine— and had been friends with the daughter. Tou don't understand, she says dismissively, but I do. She got herself stuck and it feels profound, it makes her feel superior. She tucks her hair behind her ear and ignores me. I can't see the fire, I can only see the house that was built after the lot was scraped clean. My friend has gone inside to get us more beer from his friend who is old enough to buy it for us. It's a party but I don't know whose and I am drunk and trying to be friendly because my friend used to date her. Down the street a man is beating his wife again, all night, the same night, years before and still tonight, even though she left him long ago. All over town pipes are still bursting in houses that are no longer there. When you build on a graveyard everything is a graveyard, and everything is a graveyard because nothing is free from history. It foods the landscape, it burns the cities to the ground. Tell someone to get over it and you've made yourself an enemy, but you have to get over it. There is no room, there is no new room. The fire is not moving away. The smoke billows. There is no house, there is no new house, there is no room, the smoke is too thick to see, it is not moving away.
