I do comedy, lecturing, journalism, radio and writing. I like beaches, books and buildings.
I’m gonna keep sharing these ovarian cancer symptoms whenever I see them.

I will add - from personal experience - diarrhoea and fatigue.

Get it checked! Remember, there’s no routine screening for ovarian cancer.

Today’s theme is #pictures, and this is that time I was somehow magically all alone in the room with Vermeer’s The Girl with the Pearl Earring at the Mauritshuis in Den Haag.

But - can’t deny that I’m loving my new cheekbone/chin definition. Couldn’t carry my pre-chemo haircut without the weight loss.

Pre-chemo haircut. My lovely hairdresser came to my flat and didn’t charge me. She is the best.

Repost with an iconic fictional band (if you feel like it).

I was feeling a bit of cabin fever so these legends took me for a bracing visit to Jennycliff, where we had lunch in the cafe. Please admire the stunning vista of Plymouth waterfront and Drake’s Island in the background.

Because of Reasons, a very dear friend and ex-colleague of mine is the British representative for Tristan da Cunha, which means every couple of years he lays a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of British Overseas Territories. It makes me very proud. It’s a long way from commercial local radio.

👉 Contact your GP surgery if you have any of these symptoms and they are new for you, don’t go away or happen more than 12 times a month. Keep going back to your GP if your symptoms don’t improve even if you have had a normal CA125 blood test result.

What would normally be a squidgy older lady belly, the sort that easily squishes into size 16 high waisted M&S jeans, suddenly looked like this - really stretched and hard.

Apparently this is an absolutely classic sign of ovarian cancer. So now you know. And so do I. 3/

Hope the fish & chips is better than my lunch.

Luckily I brought in a halfway decent emergency wrap.

Today I’m in hospital for some essential pre-chemo maintenance and… well, luckily I did bring a Tesco meal deal just in case.

Incidentally the first list of ovarian cancer symptoms I ever read was in a copy of Bella magazine in the gynae waiting room at Derriford Hospital at 10.30pm. I’d popped into see my GP about my swollen belly that morning then spent hours waiting variously for triage, doctor, blood test, CT scan…

There’s no screening for ovarian cancer and it’s really difficult to spot: you can’t squidge your ovaries in the shower to check for lumps. Also it’s very good at masquerading at other things, like IBS and diverticulitis.

Please take a look at this list of symptoms - and share if you can.

@brokenbiros.bsky.social Thought of you when these popped up on Facebook.

One positive about being ill - I’m absolutely smashing my GoodReads challenge.

It’s great, and really friendly. I’ve been twice and in fact it came up in Facebook memories today.

My sister, possibly the best person in the world, came to Plymouth to support me in a big hospital meeting thing, and today we went into the actual outside for coffee and a very delicate stroll (delicate by me, not her).

If you’re gonna spend a night in hospital, it’s extremely pleasing to somehow end up with a single en suite room. I’ll take my blessings where I can (I am of course awake as I went to bed at 9pm).

I went to see the sun.

Helios by Luke Jerram, the guy who did Moon and Gaia. It’s at the beautiful Devonport Market Hall until tomorrow.
