My furthest work trip north* in the UK today, visiting @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social to give a seminar talk. Very misty and atmospheric on the journey up!

(* I think, though it must be close with the conference I went to on Skye some years ago.)

A new study by the Observatory for Mathematical Education, commissioned by U-Maths, finds that students at these schools achieve higher A Level grades and are significantly more likely to progress to the UK’s most selective STEM universities than comparable students elsewhere.

🚨 @fftedudatalab.bsky.social shows only 9% of disadvantaged pupils with strong primary maths skills achieve a B+ at A-Level.

The research shows where pupils fall away. Our own research shows why: disengagement arrives early in secondary school.

Very enjoyable day in Manchester today, giving the Algebra seminar at the Department of Mathematics at @uniofmanchester.bsky.social, talking about my work with Matthew Pressland (Caen) and catching up with a variety of colleagues. Plus a bit of trying to implement the old classic (time+coffee=maths)

Today I was asked in an interview about folks who use the weirdness of ✨quantum✨ to hawk pseudoscience junk. I think that kind of grift proliferates because of a big misunderstanding a lot of folks have about quantum mechanics, which is not really their fault!

Just finished The Moonlight Market by @joannechocolat.bsky.social - highly recommend! A sideways step into a world that could be (is??) ours and the writing has beautiful cadences, evocative of stories from our childhood but for us now. Slightly regretting reading it so quickly but couldn't help it.
