This was really enjoyable thank you for sharing - I must have watched my VHS copy of tank police hundreds of times as a kid and it’s really interesting to get an insight into the wider context of anime in the uk during this time.

Then you discover he’s just feeding a facility that’s sole purpose is to manufacture the boulders he’s breaking up! And when he gets the chance to escape with Ulysses he chooses not to because he’d rather endure endless drudgery than face an unknown fate.

Episode 5 - the eternal punishment - the episode with Sisyphus. Inverting the idea of pushing rocks up a mountain, the image of the pit he has to shove junk into has stayed with me since I first saw it!

This has a tiny bit of female perspective on events too courtesy of the protagonists wife and hints at what she goes through. Amazing audio production on coming of the Martians though especially the heat ray’s first sweep across the rooftops!

Also enjoyed a couple of good faithful audio dramatisations of the book - one called the coming of the Martians and another done by the BBC a while ago which is super gritty, especially the bit with the curate.

Feel silly saying it but if anyone’s never read the original book I’d really recommend it. There is a good audio book of it which sadly doesn’t appear to be available on the popular abook site which was read by someone called John Banks.

Jem is a fashion cartoon, and I believe its Costume Designer, Debra Pugh, deserves more credit for the thousands of costumes she designed over 3 seasons and 65 episodes, pulling extensively from fashion magazines, trade journals, and advertisements to tell characters’ stories through fashion.

I’ve always wanted to meet someone who remembered the high end Christmas cracker novelties from back in the day. A step up from 2d plastic galleons, hopping frogs and rigid fake moustaches - I remember a revolving globe key ring and a copper effect metal articulated fish key ring too?

I loved it and really don’t understand why it was disliked? Genuinely don’t know as it was just more SMG and who wouldn’t have wanted that!

Many gravestones are crimes against design - this takes it to another level!
