@barryglendenning.bsky.social Hey Barry. Heard on the last pod that you admire Peter Drury. Well hopefully you’ll enjoy this film he narrated for Berkhamsted FC - his local team, where I’m a director. We’re a small club with a big heart, playing step 3 of non league

A warm welcome to the new @thefence.bsky.social from Ziggy and I. A different kind of slow news.

Six years ago today this came out. My debut novel, Our Life in a Day. It got some lovely reviews, had a wonderful launch and the readers I met enjoyed it. I remain hugely proud of it.

I absolutely love this piece from @thefence.bsky.social. Partly because I remember the band and recognise every musical reference in it. Partly because the amount of conversations I’ve had about reforming my old band has surged after turning 40. A funny, true piece of writing.
'In my fortieth year I was going to be in a band. And I was going to be unfuckable.'

James Ramsden is having an immaculate midlife crisis.

The big story in my club’s (Berkhamsted FC) league is hitting the headlines. Given that we’re second and three points behind Real Bedford, it’s dominating a lot of conversation about the outcome of the league. www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Delighted to launch the new podcast from Publicis Pro.

Untrended. A show taking on the big topics in business and marketing, without any of the ‘get up at 5am’ bullshit and growth hacks you find elsewhere.

Our first episode is about the cognitive impact of AI. open.spotify.com/episode/4jGi...

Nothing says British Christmas like a bloke in a Santa costume being towed around an estate on a trailer in the driving rain. Organised by the Rotary club.

I’d get £30 for this if I ran Yellow Bittern.

Delighted to see this published yesterday. Untrended is the collected ideas about business and marketing from the clever souls at Publicis Pro (the agency wot I work at). I love print, so am thrilled to have managed this into being. Also includes a crossword.

Everyone at The Fence has painful experience of the freelance pitching grind, so we've always sought to make our pitching process as open and encouraging as possible. We also pay everyone promptly. If you feel like you might be our next First Byline, hit the mail below. We don't bite.
We read all the cold pitches we receive, and we've had at least one writer get their very first print byline in the last five issues.

Send us your best ideas to editorial@the-fence.com - we look forward to hearing from you
When I was in my twenties I would email newspaper editors in the hope they might give me a break. I was a total nobody (some would argue I still am). The only person who emailed back was the editor of The Observer Roger Alton. He always got back and it led to me being published in the paper.

If this is 2009 to 2012 era Twitter, I would like to see two things:

1. @foylesforbooks.bsky.social BookGame return.
2. The Shippams Fish Paste parody account.

#paste
We are doing a speed re-run of 2009 to 2012 Twitter right now, and it’s clear news organisations have forgotten rule one of that era:

Assume any account of a notable person is fake until you have very, very good confirmation otherwise.
BREAKING: This Bluesky post supposedly by incoming trans congresswoman Sarah McBride is NOT REAL, her spox Michaela Kurinsky-Malos tells me.

"We have reached out to Bluesky to remove this & the Guardian to offer immediate remedial action on their story."

Follow The Fence. Buy The Fence. Convince others to buy The Fence.

It’s the best, and indeed only, magazine in the UK.
Afternoon, new followers. Twitter's sudden fall is worrying news for small publications like ours. If you like what we do, buy a magazine from the archive or even a subscription for the year.

I am now working on the assumption that Hugh Corcoran is a huge Adrian Mole fan, and Yellow Bittern is a deep cut reference to when Adrian became an offal chef in The Cappucino Years.
Of all the restaurants which are run by a communist and an aristo, only open for weekday lunches, only take cash and only take bookings by phone, the Yellow Bittern in London’s King’s Cross has to be the best. My restaurant review from today’s Observer.

Idea for an AI powered app:

𝙄𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜?

You input your idea for a novel, screenplay, game, article, and it tells you if it might be something before you waste your time getting started.
