The Ashburton Lakes (Hakatere) region is a high altitude basin between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers, Canterbury, New Zealand. It was heavily glaciated as the kame terraces (deposits of a river running along the flank of a #glacier) show. #geomorphology #photo #geology #geography #Aotearoa

Gravel cliffs at Rakaia Gorge, Canterbury. This cliff displays two #glacial #outwash gravels. The lower, orange gravel is from MIS 6 (c. 150,000 years ago), while the upper grey gravel is from the last glaciation c. 26,000 yrs ago. #geomorphology #photo #geography #geology #NewZealand #Aotearoa

wave-cut terraces on the flank of Banks Peninsula at Sumner. The very low terrace is likely mid-Holocene while the prominent higher terrace may be last interglacial. #geomorphology #coastal #Aotearoa #NewZealand #photo #geology #geography

The modern shore platform at Kaikoura. On this tectonically active coastline there are are series of raised marine terraces. The coast is periodically uplifted - the last time by the M w 7.8 earthquake in 2016.

Rapid incision of rivers through bedrock creates strath (rock) terraces. This example is from the Kawerau Gorge in Otago, New Zealand.

Tafoni (cavernous weathering) in rhyolite on Ahu Ahu (Great Mercury Island), New Zealand. The formation of tafoni is cryptic, but this boulder is about 150m from the sea and it may be due to salt weathering.

Yesterday I showed a photo of an eroded #dune at the back of a beach in #Christchurch. The foredunes are eroded and build up again very quickly, as the plastic wrapper eroding from the dune shows. They act as key protection for the land behind. #coastal #erosion #aotearoa #geology #geomorphology

This is a fascinating post from the #Independent. One of the primary drivers of #Brexit was for the #UK to regain control of its borders and to limit #immigration. The reverse has happened, mostly under the #Conservatives. Narrative versus reality?
