To be clear, I definitely call out the RepubliKlans more, and will express gratitude to the *handful* of Dems who actually fight, but right now absolute failures like @schumer.senate.gov, and *ANY* Dem who is not *LIVID* right now, are the reason this sentiment is only going to grow and is *EARNED*.

From reading that, it seems like the California program is fundamentally different from the federal CARS program in multiple ways. Targeting low-income communities and disassembling the vehicles instead of crushing them (after making them unusable) are massive improvements to the federal boondoggle.

A customer car that could have been fixed with an inexpensive used engine now needs a new one, which is either very expensive or hard to get (or both). That customer then buys a replacement used car. Demand goes up, prices go up, supply actually goes down.

It's not just the 677,000 cars removed from the market. It's all the cars those cars could have kept running. I have been in the car repair business for 30+ years now, and the way you couldn't get used parts (or even cores) for popular vehicles for years afterwards affected the market hugely.
