🚨 New paper alert! 🚨

Led by @elliehonan.bsky.social we used miniaturised GPS loggers to track snow petrels during a year when sea ice hit record lows 📉

Antarctic's toughest birds are more adaptable than we thought foraging in open water as well as marginal ice 🧊

I’ve been reflecting on my time at #WEF25 with @arcticbasecamp.bsky.social. I learned a lot and, while progress is slow, I met great people pushing for climate action. That gives me hope.

I wrote about my experience for the Shackleton Journal:

Ahead of the #WEF2025 in Davos next week I’ve checked out the @arcticbasecamp.bsky.social PolarRisk Name Generator. Here you can create your own Polar Risk name and learn more about what’s happening at the poles and how it affects all of us.

The Arctic is warming 4x faster than the global average—time to act is now. Stay tuned for updates from the Arctic Basecamp tent! 🧊🌍

❄️ Next week, I’ll be in Davos as Arctic Basecamp’s Scientist in Residence! ❄️

We'll be hosting briefings, sharing the latest climate science, and helping to ‘speak science to power.’

Gerald Durrell would have been 100 years old today

Visiting Jersey Zoo as a 10 year old had a profound impact on me and this quote has stayed with me ever since

Visiting Glasgow Uni this week and saw this vintage action shot of Bob Furness. Anyone know the back story? Where was it taken?

Really enjoyed chatting about my work as part of the ANTSIE project at the SCAR Open Science Conference this week

It’s been inspiring to meet so many people working to understand Antarctica and the Southern Ocean

Here’s a throw back to our first few days in Antarctica this season, when we had an opportunity to hike up the local nunatak T-Rex 🦖 and see our first snow petrels ☺️

Incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return to #Antarctica at the end of 2023, meaning I started and ended the year on a continent I dreamt of visiting as a kid.

I hope 2024 is also full of adventure!

It may be winter solstice here in the UK but that means it’s mid-summer down in Antarctica.

While I’m looking forward to the longer days coming, the sun won’t set at Lake Untersee until the end of January!

Snow petrels live in the most extreme environments. They breed amongst boulders high on Antarctic nunataks where summer temperatures may be -15 Celsius. To find food they have to fly hundreds of kilometres back out to the edge of the sea ice

Made the most of the better weather yesterday to explore the area around Wolfs Fang and Echo Camp.

We were just mucking about for 10km but it’s pretty hard going through snow and ice.

Respect to Omar di Felice who is riding to the pole and towing his kit on a pulk!

It’s been a wild few days at Wolfs Fang!

The storm that pulled us out of Lake Untersee early hit us pretty hard, with peak gusts of 65 kts or 120 kph yesterday.

With winds that fierce we’ve not been able to do too much, just hunker down and wait it out.

Safely back at Wolfs Fang after a super productive 10 days at Lake Untersee.

Our plan was to stay longer, but the weather was forecast to close in so we got an early exit. We made it back just in time, the wind is howling outside!

Spent time sitting in a snow petrel colony today. The birds are busy pairing up. We’ve seen lots of displaying flights and the odd fight or two. During fights the birds often vomit stomach oil and we’ve seen birds flying around with orange stained feathers.

Congratulations to Lara Vimercati for her first dive in Antarctica this #AntarcticaDay

More people have walked on the moon than have dived here at Lake Untersee!

After waiting a few days for the right weather window we had perfect conditions to fly over from Wolfs Fang to Lake Untersee. We’ve settled into the @setiinstitute.bsky.social camp and are ready to start fieldwork!

Great to spend a few days acclimatising to the cold and making new friends at Wolfs Fang. Now time to pack up and head to Untersee!
