Aerosols have had a net cooling effect. As these reduce their masking effect reduces and so temps go up. Methane has a strong warming effect. But these two are fast responses. CO2 stays in atmosphere for centuries and it's that that will largely determine warming. www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/w...

The trajectory is essentially a vertical line. Glen has that excellent gif that animates how mitigation delay produces deeper net negative emissions.

Not an original take, and wasn't even meant to be writing about him but felt like I had to point out the obvious.

"we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us" I still believe Jo Cox was right. Despite what happened to her, and what I saw today. Which was a group of people, draped in a flag that is just as much mine as theirs, using it to divide us.

An event put together to counter this far-right march (massively outnumbered). They passed each other without incident. Very large police presence - which effectively kettled Exeter is Everyone to allow the far-right their march.

Alas, every generation needs to learn how to push back against racism and fascism. But in doing that we can also learn how we are better together. Today's Exeter is for Everyone rally 1/2 exeterisforeveryone.com

Big turnout at the Exeter is For Everyone rally today that was held to oppose the far-right march through the town centre. Music, singing, chanting and a whole lot of love for diversity.

Net zero by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5°C. That may have been plausible 10 years ago, but the continued rise of emissions means that there is effectively no carbon budget left for 1.5. It is cumulative emissions that drives warming. 1/6 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Irrespective of impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, this rapid change in energy systems is going to fundamentally affect political power systems & geopolitics.

So close to actual understanding here. Holding up a sign that says "I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action" shouldn't be illegal & certainly not something that consumes hundreds of police officers to enforce. Just let them have their peaceful protest.

Photovoltaic panels now produce the cheapest electricity in history. Battery storage is accelerating on the back of new chemistries. EV sales are replacing existing ICE fleets. It's not happening fast enough, but it's happening.

"Nearly 90% of annual upstream oil and gas investment since 2019 has been dedicated to offsetting production declines rather than to meet demand growth."
The age of fossil fuels is ending. Our job is to accelerate its demise.

I think your equivalence with current right wing politics while completely authentic is not reasonable. There are actual fascists who are going to use every single fibre of power to persecute political opponents.

Had a very colourful visitor to the office today. There are many more butterflies around this year. The range of the Peacock Butterly is expanding in the UK, perhaps as a result of climate change. A small positive within a terrible period of insect decline.

Absolutely there are some folk that need to carry loads on poor roads. Percentage of the UK population? 1%? Car obesity is a crisis that results from car manufacturers figuring this is a way to increase profits.
