So when he looked out of the window that morning to see snowflakes falling past his window, he didn’t see the horror implied by the storm. He saw a flurry of white magic, falling down to cover the land around his home in fresh adventure. It was just after dawn, and Ben had rushed downstairs from bed to open the first little window on his advent calendar. The countdown had finally begun. Twenty-four little doors to be opened before the big day. How could it get any better? How about waking up inside a winter wonderland? He watched the snow fall faster, turning the outside world into a white blur. The last time it had snowed was over two years ago. How lucky he was to begin the Christmas countdown this way. Ben crept back to the hallway and looked up the staircase towards his parents’ bedroom. The door was still closed, the soft low rumble of snoring vibrating through the door. Still sleeping. His parents had always been funny about snow. Always told him how dangerous it was, how the cold could make you very ill. He had never been allowed outside to fully enjoy it. Not until his parents said so, and by then it was always too late. The snow would be beginning to melt, not solid enough to play with any more. Just this once, he would go outside and make the most of it.
