Tuesday my union offered to call off 2 weeks of strikes, in return for postponing the redudnacy of, maybe, 5 people for three months. Yesterday the uni wrote to all staff saying "not interested", unless we completely caved. Today we toured picket lines across campus:

If this were in a sector in which the PM could go and do a photoshoot looking like One Of The People, we’d have had a government intervention by now.

Please help me get the word out about the new websites for Legal Theory Blog and the Legal Theory Lexicon. Reposting here and on other social media sites is great. It would be especially helpful if law school faculty members could send an email to their colleagues with the new addresses.

When Universities are mismanaged or run into financial issues, it's always the staff and NEVER the management who lose their jobs.

On the contrary, they get above-inflation pay rises that are the equivalent to one or two of the full time jobs they cut.

How and why do we let this happen?
'The university has informed staff of plans to cut 400 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions by July 2026, with academics the first to go.'

Professor Andy Schofield, VC at Lancaster University since 2020, will take up position of Principal & VC at Glasgow University on 1 October 2025.

Couldn't agree more with this. It's jaw-dropping to see the patty cake people are playing with him after what was a full constitutional assault that, oh by the way, is almost certainly going to lead to tens of thousands of people in the global south dying needlessly.
The flood of encomiums and morality tales about Elon's turn in Washington cldn't be more predictable, vapid & sickening. If you want a story, get me the story about the crisis comms team directing this. He ran anti-constitutional blitzkrieg thru the federal government, did massive harm, violated ...

And I should say this is only shocking because we have also normalised salaries of less than £50k… There are newly qualified first year trainees in law firms asking for our expert opinions making more than that

It’s so disheartening just how normalised it has become for a job ad that requires the applicant to have attained the highest academic degree possible in human higher education to offer a salary of less than £35k a year. It’s crazy.

This is also a damning indictment of UUK and every single Vice Chancellor in the UK. They've utterly failed to convince the government that action is needed to save the higher education sector, despite their disgustingly large salaries. What are they actually being paid to do?
British Steel employs 3.6k people. Coventry Uni group, which auditors say may not survive, employs 7.7k. But there is an emergency debate in parliament for British Steel and nothing for the whole HE sector imploding
Why is the government and the news so indifferent to the meltdown happening in UK #HigherEd right now?

Our universities are the envy of the world. Yet we are at risk of losing a generation of academics and damaging the sector beyond repair.
