I fully appreciate your intent here, but worth saying that the joke doesn't make sense if he'd used 'sons' because the transphobic dads want to sexualise their *daughters*. Them having an estranged trans son instead 'robs' them of that, hence the punchline. No one is being misgendered in the joke.

Yea. So men and women hate each other (at unprecedented levels of intensity, and with greater freedom than ever to disengage with dating by choice). So the viewpoint you were mocking was accurate. It's not just a cost of living thing.

Living costs are one problem, sure, but that's about having children.
