it does come out ahead of pan's labyrinth on one point, it does not (contrary to some negative reviews of it) imply that some victims of fascism are perfect special little princes(ses) and others are just background victims/set dressing. pan's labyrinth definitely does

i feel about the same about it as i do about pan's labyrinth, the director clearly has a lot of bad instincts but the constraints of honestly appraising fascism and at least the outward logic of believing in god corral them at almost all times

an important piece of context about the movie for those who haven't seen it is that there is a constantly building crescendo of mind-boggling nazi cruelty happening in the background at all times culminating in huge heaps of corpses

ohhh it was josh o'connor in The Mastermind, directed by Kelly Reichardt, and of course the older film was alice rohrwacher's the chimera, which i thought was the greatest thing of all time
